Pradoo the undefeated, Siem Reap

Even though he barely had the strength to stand up straight and his left eye was swollen entirely shut Pradoo was triumphant that Sunday afternoon. His owner Li Gim Chuon of the Spitler Anhchanh Village was gloating but you could sense Pradoo didn’t have many fights left in him.

Fisherwoman of the Mekong River

This fisherwoman image shot near Vientiane in Laos is part of the “Of Rivers and Mantras: the Mekong System” series which was shot using a Hasselblad medium format film camera, the film then cross processed and custom drum scanned by myself in order to ensure that the very specific analog tonal values that I desired were achieved.

Data reflecting the effects of climate change and the continual building of hydroelectric dams on the hydrology of the Mekong River and the surrounding ecosystems including the Tonle Sap Lake is often complicated and subject to various interpretations. For this reason one of the main objectives of this project is to emphasize the humanity of those whose methods of survival are intrinsically impacted by these abstract sets of data in very direct ways.

The series was exhibited in New York and Phnom Penh. The image of Pan Downcast which was shot near Phnom Penh, Cambodia is from the same series.

Monk Beng Pok, Battambang

Monk Beng Pok is the abbot at the Sampeau Mountain Buddhist temple known in Khmer as Wat Sampeau. Though he doesn’t know the exact date of his birth he was born in Phnom Sampeau region of Battambang in 1940.

Sampeau Mountain is also notorious for the Killing Cave one of the locations where the Khmer Rouge summarily tortured and executed thousands of people.

When I asked him how he survived during the Khmer Rouge reign of terror from 1975 to 1980 he replied by not eating more than the daily allotted rations the farmers were given and keeping his head down while working hard.
