Kompong Khleang Floating Village

The Kompong Khleang Floating Village of the Tonle Sap Lake, Cambodia.

Kompong Khleang is the largest of the floating villages on the floodplains of the Tonlé Sap Lake and has a lost in time feel that I have been returning to and photographing for over 10 years now.

The resilience of the villagers is something to behold; their capacity to survive the extreme hydrology of the Tonle Sap Lake, the ever present threat of climate change and the destruction of the diverse ecosystems that provides their livelihoods by the onslaught of hydroelectric dams.

These images of Kompong Khleang were taken during the dry season when transportation by ground is possible. During the rainy season when the lake swells travel is limited to boats as most of what you see is submerged.

Needless to say children string jumping is a dry season activity.

Pan a Muslim boat dweller from Phnom Penh strolling on a "beach" of sand dredged up from the Mekong River.

The tonal values you see are a direct result of the experimental film cross processing and custom drum scanning done by myself.

This is another image from the "Of Rivers and Mantras" series which was exhibited in New York and Phnom Penh. The Fisherwoman image shot near Vientiane, Laos is from the same series portraying life along the Mekong River.

At the Ta Prohm temple of the Angkor Wat temple complex in Siem Reap, Cambodia. You may have seen this extraordinary temple in the original Tomb Raider film.

At times it feels as if the Ta Prohm temple is interlocked in an never-ending battle with the jungle.

Floating home, Kompong Chhnang

A boy eating his dinner in his floating home at dusk in the floating village of Kompong Chhnang. Most of the inhabitants of the floating villages in this region of the Tonle Sap Lake are not Khmer but rather Vietnamese nomads born into a stateless existence surviving off the sustenance of the lake and are therefore subject to harassment and relocation from authorities on a regular basis.
