The Dispatch Project

The format of the Dispatch Project is rooted in the documentarian tradition of the longform immersive body of work with an emphasis on an inside perspective; the aesthetics of the project on the other hand operate in an experimental manner in order bring a more dynamic perspective to the narrative.

R. Scott Davis has nurtured a close relationship with the two main EMS providers in Bangkok which has granted him unparalleled access to their work.

The future-noir tonal values in the Dispatch project are direct result of the sirens pulsing microtonal light. When captured with the proper technique the results match the gritty subject perfectly producing dense rich tones.

A heightened sense of drama is achieved by utilizing a film-still image composition that evokes the sensation of being dropped into the middle of a cinematic moment. In the image Embrace for example a feeling of tenderness is evoked as Mut the EMS technician embraces the distraught accident victim who is gesturing in the direction of the collision. Mut’s eyes are close to tearing up as she comforts the accident victim with her touch. What came before and will happen next is a mystery.

Implementing this film-still image composition also has the effect of increasing the viewer’s awareness of their subjective self while experiencing the work, instilling a deeper sense of compassion.

Education is an integral part of the project. R. Scott Davis have been supervising small groups of select photography students both Thai and international from his university coursework who wish to push their photography to a higher level for ten years. This includes imparting a sensitivity to the subjects encountered while photographing and adhering to professional ethical codes. Student activity is integrated into the project.
